We were in Vernazza at the end of May last year and this was our first meal. What a great experience. We were siting outside at the wine bar next door talking with Sandra (works there) and the Owner/Chef brought us an anchovy appetizer... Sandra even rolled out a small wine barrel for a table and tablecloth for our little impromptu meal. Delicious! So of course we had to have dinner there. The Frutti di Mare was outstanding as was everything else. Service was perfectly laid back as you would expect and enjoy in Italy and we made an evening of the meal. Went there twice more and each experience was equally enjoying.
Since returning from vacation, my friends have asked what the best thing was I ate on my trip, and my reply consistently has been "the anchovies at Gambero Rosso." We went to this restaurant on two of our three nights in Vernazza, and wished we had gone there every night. They have a beautiful location (of course, everything in Vernazza is gorgeous) on the piazza next to the cove. You can sit at outdoor tables and watch the little fishing boats bob in the waves as you enjoy some of the freshest and best-prepared seafood I've ever tasted. We ordered the mixed anchovy appetizer both nights, and, fellow Americans, please forget any preconceived notions you may have about this little fish. These were nothing like pizza anchovies, but were prepared in four different ways, all delicious. The first night, I had the trofie with pesto - the trofie (a pasta with potato in the mix) was perfectly al dente, while the creamy pesto was flavorful but not overwhelming. The second night I had the baked fish, which came with tomatoes and potatoes and was delightful. The house wine - a local white - is inexpensive and delicious. If you go to the Cinque Terre, this restaurant is well worth a stop. I just wish I could go there right now!
